Picture this: you're minutes away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Phoenix, but instead of traffic and concrete, you're stalking massive grass carp through crystal-clear canal water with a fly rod in hand. Our Canal Fly Fishing trips offer something totally unique – world-class urban fly fishing that's accessible, affordable, and downright addictive. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned angler looking for a new challenge, these desert waterways will surprise you with their incredible carp fishery. We've got the techniques dialed in, the spots mapped out, and the patience to help you land your first "ditch donkey" on the fly.
This is walking fly fishing at its finest, and it's totally different from anything you've probably done before. We'll meet up just minutes from downtown Phoenix and spend our time sight-fishing these canals for grass carp and common carp that'll blow your mind. These aren't your typical trout streams – we're talking about urban waterways where 20-30 pound fish cruise around like they own the place. The best part? This fishery is productive year-round, so whether it's blazing summer heat or cool winter mornings, the carp are feeding and we know how to make them eat. You'll be walking the banks, spotting fish, and making precise casts to individual targets. It's visual, it's exciting, and when one of these freight trains takes your fly, you'll understand why carp fishing has such a devoted following. Don't worry if you're new to fly casting – we'll work on your accuracy and give you all the pointers you need to connect with fish.
Here's where we really shine – we've developed specific techniques that make these grass carp go absolutely crazy for flies. This isn't your standard trout fishing approach; carp fishing requires totally different tactics, presentations, and patience. We'll set you up with the right gear and teach you how to read the water, spot feeding fish, and make the kind of presentations that get results. You might find yourself fishing a dry dropper rig or swinging streamers – techniques you'd never think to use for carp until you see how effective they can be. The key is accuracy and stealth. These fish are smart and spooky, but when you put the fly in the right spot with the right technique, they'll hammer it. We'll coach you through proper casting mechanics, help you understand carp behavior, and share the fly patterns that have proven most successful in these specific waters. Every guide on our team – Stan, Ryan, Bare, Derek, and Niko – brings their own expertise and preferred techniques, so you can even request a specific guide if you've got a preference.
"What a fun trip! Stan the guide was very knowledgeable and helpful during the time we spent together on the water!" - Michael. "I fished with Derek a few weeks ago and had a blast. I did the walking canal carp fishing in Phoenix and it was very entertaining trying to get my cast in the right spot to get them to eat. If I am in the area again I would 100% do it again. 10/10" - Todd. "Had a great time fishing with Nico. My first time canal carp fishing and it was a blast! Nico did an excellent job of putting us on fish and providing patient instructions on how to cast to them. I'll definitely book another trip with him!!!" - Ron Pinnell.
Grass carp are the stars of this show, and these fish will change everything you think you know about carp fishing. These are massive, powerful fish that can easily reach 30+ pounds and stretch over three feet long. They're primarily surface feeders, which makes them perfect targets for fly fishing. You'll often see them cruising just under the surface or even sipping flies right off the top – it's sight fishing at its most visual and exciting. Spring through fall tends to be prime time when they're most active, but don't count out winter fishing either. These fish feed year-round in Phoenix's mild climate, and sometimes the cooler months produce the biggest surprises. What makes grass carp so special is their fighting ability – when you hook one, it's like being connected to a freight train. They'll make long, powerful runs that'll test your drag system and your nerves.
Common carp round out the mix and bring their own unique challenges to the table. These fish are incredibly smart and can be maddeningly picky about fly selection and presentation. They're bottom feeders by nature, but they'll also take flies in the middle of the water column and even off the surface when conditions are right. Common carp average smaller than grass carp but still pack serious punch, typically ranging from 5-15 pounds with the occasional monster pushing 20+. They're more consistent feeders throughout the day and across different seasons, making them reliable targets when the grass carp get finicky. The beauty of these canal systems is that you'll often encounter both species in the same stretch of water, giving you multiple opportunities and keeping things interesting all day long.
If you're looking for something completely different from your typical fishing experience, this is it. Canal fly fishing in Phoenix offers world-class angling just minutes from downtown, and it's one of our most popular and affordable trips for good reason. The combination of accessible location, year-round fishing, and genuine trophy potential makes this a customer favorite that keeps people coming back. Whether you're a local looking to discover the hidden gem in your backyard or a visitor wanting to experience something uniquely Arizona, these urban waterways will surprise and challenge you. I always use a guide when I travel around the country. I must say Derek was one of the best that I've worked with! I've always wanted to catch carp on a fly. Derek put me on fish quickly and I landed some beautiful and large carp. Derek was very professional. I've been fly fishing for a long time but needed to make some adjustments to catch these fish. Derek provided just the right amount of advice and successfully corrected my backcast and hook set. I highly recommend Derek. If you visit AZ and want to get some time on the water you must give Derek a call!

Derek did a great job. Well prepared, on time and a great communicator. This was my first time on carp, and he did a great job of explaining the difference between fishing for trout and carp. Would recommend him to anybody who wants to get into the carping world.

What a great time. We did the walking canal fly fishing with Stan...Stan the man!!! Caught some quite large ditch donkeys up to 30+ pounds. My son and I had a blast. Can’t wait to go out on the lakes later in the spring!

First of all, I have never done fly fishing in any capacity but I’ve been intrigued with learning it and going after carp. Before and during the booking process, Derek answered all my questions and ensured I had all the information I needed. When the day finally came, the whole experience was amazing. I learned a lot and was fortunate to capture good-looking fish. One thing that should be known though is fly fishing is no easy business but so long as you are open-minded and willing to learn from Derek and the rest of his crew ... You’ll get your fish! I will be fishing with these guys again :)

We had a great time chasing carp in the canals with Derek. He was a great guide — flexible when storms affected the start of our trip, relaxed and friendly, and focused on getting us on the fish. Despite not having much experience, I was able to have success trying this new kind of fishing, and completed my goal of catching carp on a fly. Never thought I would be fishing a dry dropper rig or swinging streamers for carp — and yet I caught fish on both! Great trip and would love to be back.

Common carp are stocky fighters that average 10-25 pounds in these canals, with some beasts hitting 40+. They're bottom feeders that love muddy areas and slow water around 4-10 feet deep, especially near structure or drop-offs. Spring and fall are money seasons when they move shallow to feed aggressively, but summer mornings and evenings produce well too. What guests love most is their raw power - these fish don't quit. They'll peel drag and test your gear like nothing else in our waters. They're scrappy, abundant, and always ready to eat. Pro tip: use a hair rig setup if you're targeting the bigger, more hook-shy ones. Keep your presentation still and let them take it - any movement will spook them off your fly.

These big silver herbivores average 20-40 pounds in our canal system, though we've seen some real monsters pushing 60+. They cruise the slower sections feeding on vegetation, usually in 3-8 feet of water near weed beds. Spring through fall are prime times when they're most active - winter slows them down but they'll still eat. What makes grass carp special is the challenge. They're incredibly spooky and picky eaters, but when you hook one, they'll jump clean out of the water and give you a fight you won't forget. My secret? Sweet corn works, but try small nymph patterns fished dead still near the surface. The moment they see movement or feel resistance, they're gone. Perfect species for testing your patience and accuracy.
