Looking for a unique fly fishing experience just minutes from downtown Phoenix? Get ready to cast for monster carp in the heart of the city with Lo Water Guide Service. Our urban canal trips offer year-round action and the chance to hook into some seriously chunky grass carp using specialized fly techniques. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting started, our expert guides will put you on fish and help you dial in your presentation. It's a budget-friendly way to scratch that fishing itch without leaving town.
This isn't your typical day on the water. We'll be stalking grass carp in Phoenix's extensive canal system, sight-fishing for these often-overlooked freshwater giants. Our guides have cracked the code on getting these picky eaters to crush flies, and we're excited to share those secrets with you. Expect a fast-paced, run-and-gun style of fishing as we move along the canals, searching for feeding fish. You'll need to be on your toes, ready to make quick, accurate casts when opportunities arise. Don't worry if your casting isn't perfect – we'll work with you to improve your accuracy and boost your chances of hooking up.
Fly fishing for carp in urban canals is a whole different ballgame from trout streams or bass lakes. We'll be using specialized flies and techniques tailored to fool these wary fish. Stealth is key – these carp have eyes like hawks and spook easily. You'll learn to spot feeding fish, read their body language, and make pinpoint presentations. We typically use 5 to 7-weight rods with floating lines and long, light leaders. Our fly selection might surprise you – think small nymphs, subtle terrestrials, and even some "match-the-hatch" patterns mimicking the canal's aquatic life. Be prepared for explosive takes and blistering runs when you hook into one of these bruisers.
"Quite honestly my trip exceeded my expectations on every level. It was one of the most fun fly fishing I have done in a while. Ryan was extremely knowledgeable, very passionate but most importantly just a really fun guy! The fishing was such a unique urban environment1 I could not believe the volume of fish in the system. They were everywhere. Ryan had us keyed in on the flies to use and the techniques for the unusual species. It was just a blast. I really can't wait to come back to do some more exploring with Lo Water and Ryan! Thank you again! Jim Thompson" - jim
"Had a great day, tons of shots! Ryan had a good program, would recommend it! Ian" - Ian
"What a fun trip! Stan the guide was very knowledgeable and helpful during the time we spent together on the water!" - Michael
Common Carp: Don't let the name fool you – there's nothing "common" about hooking into one of these prehistoric-looking powerhouses on the fly. The carp in Phoenix's canals can easily top 20 pounds, with some true giants pushing 30 or even 40 pounds. These fish are incredibly strong, often described as "freshwater bonefish" for their blistering runs and dogged fights. Carp are available year-round, but spring and fall tend to offer the most consistent action as water temperatures are ideal.
What makes carp such an addictive target is their selectivity and wariness. These fish have excellent eyesight and are constantly on alert for predators. A sloppy presentation or the wrong fly choice will send them scattering. But when you do everything right – making that perfect cast, getting a natural drift, and feeling that sudden, violent take – it's an unbeatable rush.
Carp aren't just about brute strength, either. They're surprisingly intelligent fish that will test your angling skills to the limit. You'll need to read subtle feeding behaviors, adjust your presentations on the fly, and sometimes even "match the hatch" with surprisingly delicate fly patterns. It's a cerebral game that keeps even experienced anglers coming back for more.
Our Phoenix canal carp trips have become a cult favorite among fly anglers for good reason. Here's why folks can't get enough of this urban fishing adventure:

I always use a guide when I travel around the country. I must say Derek was one of the best that I've worked with! I've always wanted to catch carp on a fly. Derek put me on fish quickly and I landed some beautiful and large carp. Derek was very professional. I've been fly fishing for a long time but needed to make some adjustments to catch these fish. Derek provided just the right amount of advice and successfully corrected my backcast and hook set. I highly recommend Derek. If you visit AZ and want to get some time on the water you must give Derek a call!

I fished with Derek a few weeks ago and had a blast. I did the walking canal carp fishing in Phoenix and it was very entertaining trying to get my cast in the right spot to get them to eat. If I am in the area again I would 100% do it again. 10/10

Derek did a great job. Well prepared, on time and a great communicator. This was my first time on carp, and he did a great job of explaining the difference between fishing for trout and carp. Would recommend him to anybody who wants to get into the carping world.

Awesome experience. I had no idea the carp fishery was so strong. Derek knows where to go and what flies to use. Some of those fish are over 3 feet long. Freight train...

First of all, I have never done fly fishing in any capacity but I’ve been intrigued with learning it and going after carp. Before and during the booking process, Derek answered all my questions and ensured I had all the information I needed. When the day finally came, the whole experience was amazing. I learned a lot and was fortunate to capture good-looking fish. One thing that should be known though is fly fishing is no easy business but so long as you are open-minded and willing to learn from Derek and the rest of his crew ... You’ll get your fish! I will be fishing with these guys again :)

Common carp are tough fighters that'll test your skills. These golden-yellow bruisers average 15-30 inches and 4-30 pounds, with some monsters pushing 100 pounds. You'll find them in slow-moving water, often near the bottom of lakes and canals. They're not picky eaters, so corn or bread can work, but fly fishing with nymphs is a blast. Carp get a bad rap, but they're smart and put up a hell of a fight. Spring and fall are prime times when they're in the shallows feeding hard. In summer, try early mornings or evenings when it's cooler. One local trick: be stealthy. These fish spook easily, so approach quietly and use dull-colored gear. If you can master an accurate cast, you'll up your chances big time. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned angler, carp fishing in Phoenix is an affordable way to bend a rod without leaving the city.

Did what a guide does....put me on the fish. Good day. Would recommend Derek for a great day fishin' and more importantly......catchin'!!
