Forget what you think you know about carp fishing - this ain't your grandpa's corn and dough bait rodeo. We're talking sight fishing for these bruisers with flies, which is about as exciting as it gets. You'll be stalking the banks of urban canals and waterways, spotting fish, and making pinpoint casts to fool them. Our guides have developed special flies and presentations that trigger strikes from even the wariest carp. We'll teach you how to spot feeding fish, make a stealthy approach, and present your fly without spooking them. It's a game of stealth, accuracy, and patience - but when it all comes together, you're in for one heck of a fight. These fish pull like freight trains and will test your tackle and your skills. Don't be surprised if you find yourself addicted to "carping" after just one trip!
"What a fun trip! Stan the guide was very knowledgeable and helpful during the time we spent together on the water!" - Michael
"Quite honestly my trip exceeded my expectations on every level. It was one of the most fun fly fishing I have done in a while. Ryan was extremely knowledgeable, very passionate but most importantly just a really fun guy! The fishing was such a unique urban environment1 I could not believe the volume of fish in the system. They were everywhere. Ryan had us keyed in on the flies to use and the techniques for the unusual species. It was just a blast. I really can't wait to come back to do some more exploring with Lo Water and Ryan! Thank you again!" - jim
"Derek did a great job. Well prepared, on time and a great communicator. This was my first time on carp, and he did a great job of explaining the difference between fishing for trout and carp. Would recommend him to anybody who wants to get into the carping world." - Jake
Common Carp: Don't let the name fool you - there's nothing "common" about hooking into one of these bad boys on the fly. These fish are the bread and butter of our urban fly fishing trips, and for good reason. Common carp in the Phoenix area canals can grow to impressive sizes, with fish over 20 pounds not uncommon. They're incredibly strong fighters, often described as "freshwater bonefish" due to their powerful runs and stamina. What makes them so exciting is their wariness - they're constantly on the lookout for danger, making them a true challenge to fool with a fly. The best time to target them is during the warmer months when they're most active, but we fish for them year-round. Watching a big carp slowly rise to sip your fly off the surface is a heart-pounding experience that keeps anglers coming back for more.
Grass Carp: While less common than their "common" cousins, grass carp provide an extra special challenge for fly anglers. These fish can grow even larger, with specimens over 30 pounds possible. They're primarily herbivores, which means we use specialized flies that imitate vegetation to trick them. Grass carp are known for their incredibly powerful runs - hook into one of these, and you'd better hope your drag is set right! They're most active in the warmer months when vegetation growth is at its peak. The satisfaction of fooling one of these selective feeders is hard to beat, and the ensuing battle is one you won't soon forget.

I always use a guide when I travel around the country. I must say Derek was one of the best that I've worked with! I've always wanted to catch carp on a fly. Derek put me on fish quickly and I landed some beautiful and large carp. Derek was very professional. I've been fly fishing for a long time but needed to make some adjustments to catch these fish. Derek provided just the right amount of advice and successfully corrected my backcast and hook set. I highly recommend Derek. If you visit AZ and want to get some time on the water you must give Derek a call!

I fished with Derek a few weeks ago and had a blast. I did the walking canal carp fishing in Phoenix and it was very entertaining trying to get my cast in the right spot to get them to eat. If I am in the area again I would 100% do it again. 10/10

First of all, I have never done fly fishing in any capacity but I’ve been intrigued with learning it and going after carp. Before and during the booking process, Derek answered all my questions and ensured I had all the information I needed. When the day finally came, the whole experience was amazing. I learned a lot and was fortunate to capture good-looking fish. One thing that should be known though is fly fishing is no easy business but so long as you are open-minded and willing to learn from Derek and the rest of his crew ... You’ll get your fish! I will be fishing with these guys again :)

Common Carp are tough, golden-yellow fish that put up a great fight. Most weigh 4-30 pounds, but the big ones can top 100 pounds. They love warm, slow-moving water and hang out near the bottom of lakes and ponds. Spring and fall are prime times to catch them feeding in the shallows. Carp fishing is a blast because they're strong and don't tire easily. They can be spooky though, so stealth is key. A 9-foot rod with 7-8 weight line works well for average-sized carp. Simple baits like corn or bread can be effective, but boilies are a local favorite if you want to splurge a bit. One tip: use a hair rig to present your bait - it helps fool hook-shy fish. Whether you're a beginner or experienced angler, carp offer an exciting urban fishing challenge right in Phoenix's backyard.
What a fun trip! Stan the guide was very knowledgeable and helpful during the time we spent together on the water!
