You'd never guess that some of the best fly fishing in Arizona happens right in the heart of Phoenix. Our canal carp trips are hands-down one of the most unique fishing experiences you'll find anywhere - and they're literally minutes from downtown. These aren't your typical mountain stream adventures. We're talking about stalking massive grass carp in urban waterways using specialized techniques that I've spent years perfecting. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned fly angler looking for something totally different, this trip will surprise you. The fish are here year-round, the action is consistent, and honestly, it's some of the most fun you can have with a fly rod without leaving the city.
This is urban fly fishing at its finest. We'll meet up just minutes from downtown Phoenix and head to canals that most people drive past without a second thought. But trust me, these waterways are absolutely loaded with grass carp - some pushing over three feet long. The setting might be different from what you're used to, but the fishing is world-class. We keep groups small with a max of four guests, so you'll get plenty of personal attention and coaching. The trip works perfect if you've only got a few hours to spare, and since these fish are active all year, we don't have to worry about seasonal windows. My team of guides - Stan, Ryan, Bare, and Derek - each bring their own style to these trips, and you can request your favorite if you've fished with us before. The techniques we use are totally unique to this fishery, and I've watched complete beginners hook up using methods that took me years to dial in.
Canal carp fishing is nothing like trout fishing - these fish require a completely different approach. We use specific fly patterns and presentation techniques that trigger aggressive takes from grass carp. The key is accuracy and stealth. These fish are spooky in shallow, clear water, so we'll work on your casting precision and teach you to read the water like a carp. We'll show you how to identify feeding fish, the right flies to use in different conditions, and most importantly, how to present your fly so these grass carp can't resist. Don't worry if your casting needs work - we'll help you dial it in on the water. But if you're already an accurate caster, you're going to absolutely crush it. The techniques we've developed are game-changers, and once you see how these fish react to the right presentation, you'll be hooked on this style of fishing.
"My guide Ryan Weddle was excellent very knowledgeable of the area, extremely patient and professional. Ryan went above and beyond to accommodate our groups needs and was very prepared to ensure we got the most fishing accomplished during our allotted time." - Rob
"Derek is patient and taught us some key techniques for canal carp. He was flexible with our dates due to a bunch of rain. He wanted us to have a great experience - and we did. We will be scheduling with Derek again! Thank you Derek." - Alan Thornton
"Quite honestly my trip exceeded my expectations on every level. It was one of the most fun fly fishing I have done in a while. Ryan was extremely knowledgeable, very passionate but most importantly just a really fun guy! The fishing was such a unique urban environment! I could not believe the volume of fish in the system. They were everywhere. Ryan had us keyed in on the flies to use and the techniques for the unusual species. It was just a blast. I really can't wait to come back to do some more exploring with Lo Water and Ryan! Thank you again! Jim Thompson" - jim
Common carp, specifically grass carp, are the stars of this show, and they're absolutely perfect for fly fishing. These fish are incredibly smart and can grow massive in Arizona's canal systems - we're talking fish that can stretch over three feet and fight like freight trains. Grass carp are herbivores, which means they're constantly grazing and moving through the shallows where we can sight-fish them. They're active year-round in Phoenix's mild climate, but they really turn on during the warmer months when their metabolism kicks into high gear. What makes these fish so exciting is their combination of size, intelligence, and fight. When a big grass carp takes your fly, you'll know it immediately. They make blistering runs and use their broad tails to create serious pressure on your rod. The visual aspect is what really gets people hooked - watching a three-foot carp slowly approach your fly, then explode on it right in front of you, never gets old. These fish have taught many anglers to become better casters and more patient hunters, skills that translate to every other type of fly fishing.
This is hands-down our most affordable trip, and it's perfect whether you're new to fly fishing or looking to add something completely different to your angling skills. The fact that we can do this year-round, just minutes from downtown Phoenix, makes it ideal for locals and visitors alike. You'll walk away with techniques that work nowhere else and stories about urban fly fishing that'll surprise everyone back home. Our guides know these canals inside and out, and we've got the fly patterns and methods dialed in to give you the best shot at success. Don't see the dates you want online? Just text us at 602-300-1881 and we'll work something out. These canal carp trips fill up fast because word is getting out about how good this fishing really is. Book now and get ready for some of the most unique fly fishing you'll ever experience.

I always use a guide when I travel around the country. I must say Derek was one of the best that I've worked with! I've always wanted to catch carp on a fly. Derek put me on fish quickly and I landed some beautiful and large carp. Derek was very professional. I've been fly fishing for a long time but needed to make some adjustments to catch these fish. Derek provided just the right amount of advice and successfully corrected my backcast and hook set. I highly recommend Derek. If you visit AZ and want to get some time on the water you must give Derek a call!

I fished with Derek a few weeks ago and had a blast. I did the walking canal carp fishing in Phoenix and it was very entertaining trying to get my cast in the right spot to get them to eat. If I am in the area again I would 100% do it again. 10/10

Derek did a great job. Well prepared, on time and a great communicator. This was my first time on carp, and he did a great job of explaining the difference between fishing for trout and carp. Would recommend him to anybody who wants to get into the carping world.

Awesome experience. I had no idea the carp fishery was so strong. Derek knows where to go and what flies to use. Some of those fish are over 3 feet long. Freight train...

First of all, I have never done fly fishing in any capacity but I’ve been intrigued with learning it and going after carp. Before and during the booking process, Derek answered all my questions and ensured I had all the information I needed. When the day finally came, the whole experience was amazing. I learned a lot and was fortunate to capture good-looking fish. One thing that should be known though is fly fishing is no easy business but so long as you are open-minded and willing to learn from Derek and the rest of his crew ... You’ll get your fish! I will be fishing with these guys again :)

These golden-brown fighters are what make our Phoenix canal trips so addictive. Common carp average 15-30 inches and pack serious muscle - they'll test your drag and make long runs that get your heart pumping. They cruise the canal bottoms year-round, using those whisker-like barbels to hunt insects, plants, and crustaceans. Spring and fall bring the best action when they move shallow and feed aggressively, but honestly, we catch them in Arizona's warm canals even through winter. What guests love most is the technical challenge - these fish are smart and spook easily, so accurate casting and patience pay off. Here's the local secret: watch for muddy water or bubbles where they're rooting around feeding. That's your money spot right there.

Did what a guide does....put me on the fish. Good day. Would recommend Derek for a great day fishin' and more importantly......catchin'!!
